Newham Swords Fencing Club achieved its best ever result when two of it’s international fencers returned from the Junior European Championships with a Team Bronze medal. Kristjan Archer (the GB U20 No 2, and current U20 National and Commonwealth Champion) and Amol Rattan (the GB No 3 and U20 Commonwealth Silver Medallist) made up two thirds of the GB Team which won the bronze on the last hit against Germany. It was a nail biting match at 44-44 but GB were able to secure the last hit and take the bronze. “What a gutsy performance from Amol and Kristjan. They worked so well as a team and gave their all in the match for bronze”, said Newham Sword’s Head Coach, Pierre Harper, (who was also selected as the GB Coach for these Championships).
Other outstanding results at the Europeans came from Rajan Rai (the GB U17 No. 4) who was able to reach the top 40 in the Cadet Individual Event, and from Jai Birch (the GB No. 1) who got the best GB result of the Europeans and came 9th in the Cadet Individual Event.
“I am over the moon with Newham Sword’s first medal in a major junior international tournament. It just goes to show what can be achieved by the fencers given the right support and training. I would like to thank the Mayor for the part which he played in helping the Club’s international fencers financially. Without this support, our fencers would not have even qualified for the Europeans!”, said Club Manager Linda Strachan.
