Newham Fencers Take Gold for the Eighth Time in Succession!!!

Newham Fencing Team took gold for the eighth year in succession when it’s Senior Team remained undefeated throughout  the day before beating Ealing in the final of the Senior Age Group Event.

The Senior Team comprised GB U17 Internationals, Katrina Feklistova, Alan Lozovik, Kamal Minott and Rachel Shaw plus new recruit and Lister School fencer, Alex Simos.

“Winning this event for the last eight years is an outstanding achievement which is unlikely to be equalled for a very long time”, said Newham Team Manager, Linda Strachan.

The Junior Team, which comprised Lister School fencers, Issa Koudou, Alessander and Dominic Cook, Misha Djemali, Sam Mvemba and Graham Stevenson, and Cumberland School fencer, Emilija Lukaite, ended up in 5th place after winning all of their group stage matches and being ranked 5th, before losing to the City of Westminster in the Direct Elimination stages.

“The Junior Team did remarkably well, taking into account that the majority of the Team had never fenced in a fencing competition before. I was extremely disappointed that they were given a 5th ranking before the Direct Elimination stages, despite the fact that they had won all of their group stage matches. Had they not drawn the City of Westminster (the number four seeds), they would have made the last four and the overall result would have been very different”, remarked Strachan.

As it stands, with a first in the Senior Event and a fifth in the Junior Event, the Newham Team took silver in the overall competition.
