Newham Swords Take Medals at the British Youth Championships

Three Newham fencers took medals at the 2014 British Youth Championships, held in Sheffield over the May Bank Holiday.
 
GB U17 International, Ciaran Archer took the bronze in the U16 Boys Age Group whilst fellow international, Alan Lozovik, took the bronze in the U18 Boys Category. Clubmate, and England U15 International, Alice Campbell, took Newham Sword’s third medal of the weekend when she gained the bronze in the U14 Girls Category.
 

Newham Swords next event will be the London Youth Games, where the Club have helped Newham win the Fencing Trophy for the last seven years in succession.

Young Swords Fencers Take Yet More Medals!!

Newham Swords Fencing Club’s younger fencers continued their purple patch by taking top honours at both the London Region Qualifier and the St. Benedicts National Leon Paul Junior Series Tournament, both held at the weekend.
Darica Au (aged 14), remained undefeated throughout the day before winning the U14 Girls Age Group at the London Region Qualifier. This now means that Au has qualified for the British Youth Championships Finals, which will take place in May 14.
At the St. Benedict’s National Leon Paul Junior Series Tournament, Jacob Haynes and England International, Alice Campbell, each took Gold in the U12 Boys and U15 Girls Ag Group respectively, whilst fellow England International, Emilija Lukaite and Benjamin Urzdal took silver and bronze in the U13 Girls and U13 Boys respectively.
“It is fantastic that our younger fencers are now starting to get some great results, following the success of our older fencers this season,” said Club Manager, Linda Strachan

Newham Fencer selected for World Junior Championship

Reigning U17 National Champion, and Newham Swords Fencer, Kamal Minott, has recently gained selection for the Cadet World Championships which will take place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, at the beginning of April 2014

This is Minott’s second major tournament of his fencing career, having already competed for GB at the Cadet European Championships last month. Kamal fenced superbly at these Championships, helping the GB Team make the last 8 of the Team Event.

Minott was not the only member of Newham Swords to be selected for the Cadet World Championships – Swords Club Manager, Linda Strachan, and Swords Head Coach, Pierre Harper, have also been selected as the GB Team Manager and GB Foil Coach respectively.

“We are very proud of Kamal’s achievements over the last month. He has not only defended his National Title, but has also been selected for both the Cadet Europeans and Cadet Worlds. We now look forward to coaching him at the Worlds next month”, said Club Manager, Strachan.

The Newham Gold Rush Continues

[jbox]Following in the footsteps of their older team-mates, three Newham Swords fencers took as many medals at the London Leon Paul Junior Series National Foil Tournament, held last weekend.

In the U11 and U13 Boys Age Group, Jacob Haynes and Benjamin Udrzal each took bronze respectively, whilst England U15 International, Emilija Lukaite, took gold in the U15 Girls. Hindes, Udrzal and Lukaite will now prepare for the Eastern Region Championships, taking place at the end of this month.

“I am really proud of what our younger fencers have achieved. They have all worked extremely hard this season and are a real pleasure to coach”, said Swords Manager and Coach, Linda Strachan.

Newham Swords Take Top Honours at the GB U17/U20 Championships

[jbox]GB U17 International and GB No. 2, Kamal Minott, successfully defended his National Title at the weekend when he beat the GB No. 1, Daniel Kiss, from Salle Kiss Fencing Club.

Newham Swords team-mate and fellow international, Katrina Feklistova, gained Newham Swords second medal of the day when taking the bronze medal in the U17 Girls Event, a career best. Other outstanding results in the U17 Girls Event came from Lister student, Rachel Shaw, who (aged just 14) came 7th overall.

In the U20 Boys event, GB International, Rajan Rai, took bronze after losing to the overall winner, George Hendrie from Chichester Fencing Club.

“We are so proud of these performances”, said Head Coach, Pierre Harper, “which have been brought about by sheer hard work and determination throughout the fencing season”, continued Club Manager, Linda Strachan.

Minott, Feklistova, Rai and Shaw will now prepare for the British Youth Championships Finals, taking place in Sheffield in May. [/jbox]

Newham Swords Magnificant Seven!!

[jbox]Newham Swords Fencing Club set a new club record when seven of its fencers recently qualified for the Paris U15 World Cup (taking place later this month), and the U17 European Championships (taking place at the end of February).

Rachel Shaw (England No. 2 and GB U17 International), James Page (England No. 2 and GB U17 International),Ciaran Archer (England No. 4 and GB Internatonal), Alice Campbell (England No. 5), and Emilija Lukaite (England No. 11) have all qualified for the England U15 Team which will travel to Paris for the U15 World Cup.

Older team-mates and GB Internationals, Katrina Feklistova (GB Ranked No. 3) and Kamal Minott (GB Ranked No. 2) have made it to the European Championships which will take place in Jerusalem, at the end of February.

“We are very proud of the fact that seven of our fencers have made it to Paris and the Europeans”, said Head Coach, Pierre Harper. “This tremendous achievement is the result of dedication on the part of the fencers and alot of hard work from the coaches”, continued Club Manager, Linda Strachan.

Pierre will be back soon!

[jbox]Pierre had an operation to resurface a hip joint early in the new year and is currently recovering at home. We should see him back in action after Easter. Early indications are he does not make a good patient and Linda will be pleased to see him back on the piste as soon as possible![/jbox]

Six of the Best for Newham Swords!!

[jbox]Following their performances at the recent GB Qualifiers in London, Bristol and Gateshead, a total of seven Newham Swords fencers have now been selected to fence for the GB U17 Team travelling to Bratislava and Poznan in January.

This follows their selection for the U17 International taking place in Cabries, France, later this month.

“It is amazing to have a total of seven fencers qualified for Bratislava and Posznan. This means that over half of the GB Squad originates from Newham Swords”, said Pierre Harper.
